How it works
The converter uses mathematically precise formulas with exact conversion factors defined by international standards. All conversions happen instantly in your browser.
- Length: Based on the meter (SI base unit). 1 mile = 1,609.344 m, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, etc.
- Weight: Based on the kilogram. 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg, 1 ounce = 0.028349523125 kg.
- Temperature: Uses the exact formulas: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, K = °C + 273.15. These are not simple ratios.
- Area: Based on the square meter. 1 acre = 4,046.8564224 m², 1 hectare = 10,000 m².
- Volume: Based on the liter. 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L, 1 cubic meter = 1,000 L.

Is the conversion accurate?
Yes. All conversion factors use exact internationally defined values (e.g., 1 inch = 0.0254 m exactly). The only rounding happens in the display of the final result.
How does temperature conversion work?
Unlike length or weight, temperature scales have different zero points, so simple multiplication does not work. The converter uses the exact formulas: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and K = °C + 273.15.
Can I convert between metric and imperial?
Yes. Every category includes both metric and imperial/US customary units. You can freely convert, for example, from miles to kilometers or from pounds to kilograms.
Does this work offline?

What is the difference between a US gallon and an imperial gallon?
This tool uses the US gallon (3.785411784 liters). The imperial gallon (used in the UK) is 4.54609 liters. Currently only the US gallon is supported.
Why are results sometimes shown in scientific notation?
Very large numbers (over 1 trillion) or very small numbers (under 0.0001) are displayed in scientific notation for readability. This prevents excessively long decimal strings.
